Subtract the annual fee. If the result is negative compared with a no-fee alternative, the premium card may not make sense.<\/p>\n<h3>Premium benefits<\/h3>\n<p>Travel credits, insurance, lounge access, purchase protections, and other benefits can justify a fee for some cardholders. But assigning full value to a benefit you would never purchase independently can make the calculation misleading.<\/p>\n<h3>First-year offers<\/h3>\n<p>A welcome bonus can make a card attractive initially. Reassess the card when the first annual fee is due rather than automatically assuming the introductory value continues.<\/p>\n<h3>Alternatives<\/h3>\n<p>A no-fee card with a slightly lower reward rate may deliver more dependable long-term value.<\/p>\n<p>Annual fees are not inherently bad. They are simply a cost that needs to be compared with the value received.
