The deposit may establish or support the card’s credit limit, depending on the issuer. An unsecured card normally does not require such a deposit and instead relies on the issuer’s assessment of the applicant.

Why secured cards exist

Secured cards are often designed for people who have limited, damaged, or new credit histories. The deposit reduces the issuer’s risk while giving the cardholder access to a conventional credit-card account.

The deposit is not the same thing as a prepaid balance. Purchases are generally made on the credit line, and payments are still required according to the account terms.

Unsecured cards

An unsecured card does not normally require collateral. Approval is based on the issuer’s criteria, which can include credit history and income. Unsecured products range from basic cards to premium rewards cards.

Which should you choose?

The answer depends on eligibility and purpose. Someone with an established credit profile may have no reason to choose a secured card. Someone who is rebuilding or establishing credit may find a secured product more accessible.

Compare annual fees, APR, reporting practices, deposit requirements, credit-limit policies, and whether the issuer offers a path to an unsecured account.

The bigger picture

Neither card type automatically creates good credit. What matters is how the account is managed and what information the issuer reports. Timely payments and responsible borrowing are more important than whether the card began as secured or unsecured.

A secured card can therefore be a useful stepping stone, while an unsecured card can provide greater flexibility once a lender is comfortable extending credit without collateral.

Secured and unsecured credit cards can look similar at checkout, but they work differently when the account is opened.

[11

post-1005","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-credit-cards
["GET
