How to Avoid Losing the Value of Credit Card Rewards

How to Avoid Losing the Value of Credit Card Rewards

Rewards can lose value when cardholders forget program rules or allow rewards to influence spending.

Track expiration rules

Some programs can have expiration policies or account-closure consequences. Check the current terms and redeem rewards when appropriate.

Understand redemption rates

A reward may have different values depending on whether it is redeemed for cash, travel, merchandise, or another option.

Watch for minimums

Some programs require a minimum balance before redemption. Knowing the threshold helps you avoid surprises.

Don’t carry debt for rewards

This is the most important rule. Interest on a revolving balance can easily exceed the value of the rewards earned.

Reassess after changes

Issuers can change earning categories, redemption rules, fees, and benefits. A card that was excellent two years ago may no longer be the best fit.

Rewards should be treated as a bonus on top of responsible spending. If the program becomes complicated enough that you cannot easily explain its value, a simpler card may be better.
