How Credit Card Welcome Bonuses Really Work
Welcome bonuses are designed to attract new cardholders by offering extra rewards after specified requirements are met. They can be valuable, but the conditions matter.
Minimum spending requirements
Many bonuses require a certain amount of eligible spending within a defined period. Before applying, determine whether that spending would occur naturally.
Read what counts
Not every transaction necessarily qualifies. Fees, balance transfers, cash advances, returned purchases, or other transactions may be excluded depending on the program.
Compare the regular card
A welcome bonus is temporary. After receiving it, you will continue using the card under its normal reward structure and fees. The long-term value should therefore be part of the decision.
Avoid manufactured spending
Trying to generate unnecessary purchases solely to reach a bonus can undermine the value of the offer and may conflict with issuer terms.
Consider the annual fee
A bonus may be valuable in the first year while the card becomes less attractive later. Review whether you would keep the card after the introductory period.
Welcome bonuses can be useful when they align with normal spending. They should be treated as an extra benefit, not as a reason to increase your spending or take on debt.
